Reflections on Second Year Anniversary

Kathie Tupper, LMP

Kathie is more passionate than ever going into her third year of practice!

Recently I celebrated my second anniversary as a Licensed Massage Therapist. I have spent some time reflecting on this past year, what I particularly loved about my second full year in practice, as well as some pleasant, unexpected surprises. I will share those here.

Many years ago I read the book “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success”, by Deepak Chopra. The quote I remember the most states: “According to this law, (the Law of Dharma), you have a unique talent and a unique way of expressing it. There is something that you can do better than anyone else in the whole world – and for every unique talent and unique expression of the talent, there are also unique needs. When these needs are matched up with the creative expression of your talent, that is the spark that creates affluence. Expressing your talents to fulfill needs creates unlimited wealth and abundance.” Deepak Chopra.

That is what I have found with massage. Don’t get me wrong…it’s not that I think I am the best massage therapist in town (!), and I am definitely not in this field for the money. But what I have found, is that with massage I truly have matched up my passion with a need. I have found it satisfying beyond words to know and experience that on a daily basis. I sometimes have to pinch myself, knowing that this thing I love and believe in so much is actually how I have come to make my living! I am grateful beyond measure for all of the events that led me to this place, for the wonderful clients that I have, and that I have ended up with a career that I love and enjoy. I love that I am doing this, that I am out on my own, and it is intensely satisfying to help others feel better by sharing the gift of healing touch.

There are several pleasant surprises of the last year that have really helped to solidify my passion for massage.

1. I have been able to find and cultivate my niche in the massage world of Bellingham, WA.
As far as I can determine, there are over 200 Licensed Massage Therapists in Bellingham. That’s a lot of people who are doing body work! Everybody has their own style, and finding my niche has been really important to me. I am most passionate about full-body massage, of the 90 minute to two-hour time frame. I strongly believe that everything is connected, and that working out problem areas also involves touching base with all areas of the body to insure both a relaxing and therapeutic massage. I will do more focussed and abbreviated massage upon client request, but I have found that a combination of full body, some deep tissue, some relaxation, and some treatment massage works the best for most of my clients. I am continually looking for ways to enhance the massage experience within those guidelines.

2. I didn’t expect the diversity of “Ideal Clients”. When I was in massage school, there was quite the emphasis on defining who your “ideal client” was. I did think about this, and always wanted to work on runners and athletes and people who use their bodies in a physical realm. What I have found, however, is that my “ideal client” has expanded to include a great variety of body types, physical orientations, personalities, and styles of massage. I really enjoy working with a diverse client base, and meeting the needs of my clients wherever they are on the day that they come in is always a priority. I enjoy the variety in my practice, and have enjoyed doing outcall massage as well (going to people’s homes), a part of my massage practice that I never really expected to develop. I love that each day holds something new, and no two massages are ever the same, as the human body is a unique and ever-changing entity to work with.

3. I didn’t anticipate how much I would love what I do and how RIGHT it would feel! This relates back to matching up my passion with where there is a need. I have looked for and waited my entire life for this match-up. At times, I thought I had it, but there was always something missing or I felt like I was in the right place at the wrong time in my life. The whole massage experience kind of snuck up on me…finding my place in Fairhaven, finding my niche, creating a wonderful and diverse client base, and making a difference for others with this practice I am so passionate about. I want to thank everybody who has participated in this journey with me…supportive family and friends, my teachers, mentors, and colleagues, and, of course, my fabulous clients. It just doesn’t get any better than this!
