I have noticed that many clients come to see me about one specific problem area, and it tends to dominate in their awareness as THE AREA of focus and concern in their bodies. Often this is tension in the neck, shoulders, back, or hips. This one area tends to consume them and worry them tremendously that something is “wrong” with them. Sometimes they feel OK about themselves and their health and bodies EXCEPT for this one area, which holds them back from accepting that they are fundamentally really OK. Not ideal perhaps, and massage is extremely beneficial to working these areas of high activity and aggravation. But we CAN accept where we are today, despite the aches and pains and seemingly intolerable nature of our bodies. That acceptance provides a place to begin, a jumping off point. We can delve right in to explore that area and surrounding areas, and sometimes just acknowledging that the area exists, but isn’t the sum total of that person’s experience, can be very helpful. Often clients are surprised when muscles that do the opposite action (antagonists), or the same muscles on the opposite side, are tight and sore from working overtime to compensate for the particularly vulnerable area. Simply bringing their awareness to this, and accepting that it’s all OK and just a part of their reality in that moment, allows them to let go of what feels so stuck. In our experience of our bodies, as in other areas of life, is is when we can truly accept where we are in this moment now, and let go of the idea that there is something wrong with us, that we can let go and begin to heal. We are ALL works in progress, and what a cool thing to be able to be able to offer massage as a part of that healing process!
